The cinema floated for first in 2011 and would probably float in 2012, but the Olympic gamespostponed the event for the summer of 2013. The current floating cinema is an upgraded version of the first one and is currently floating within the urban waterways of London, hosting some summer events at the same time. The platform is powered by a hybrid engine that “eats” biofuel.
Projections are held on the upper deck inside a translucent cubic structure and there is artificial light along the evening movies. Movies are projected also on a fixed surface on the shore outside the boat, which allows more people to join the projection.
The floating theater is supplied with everything that is required for a high quality movie experience: projection equipment, audio-visual system and even a small movie theatre if someone prefers to watch in privacy. Events will be streamed live on the website of Floating Cinema, so there’s no place for worrying if something is missed.
However, this isn’t the only operating floating cinema at present. “Floating Films” uses classic sailing ship from the 1920’s called SB Repertor for their projections. The ship is docked at the St. Katherine’s Dock and offer space for up to 40 customers. Another example is the Archipelago Cinema which operates at the coast of Yao Noi, Thailand. This is, in fact, a combination of a floating raft and a huge projection screen.
